Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a procedure during which the inside of the body is examined by a thin flexible tube called an endoscope to obtain a diagnosis. Endoscopic procedures may be performed under local anaesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia. Tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken during an endoscopy.

In addition, treatment can also be carried out during an endoscopic procedure (therapeutic endoscopy).

Therapeutic endoscopy has now advanced to such an extent that it has now replaced both keyhole and open surgery as the ideal way to treat many conditions.

Dr Tanwar is 'Chair of the Endoscopy User Group and endoscopy clinic lead' at The Holly Hospital where he leads the endoscopy unit ensuring that patients receive safe, efficient and effective care at all times.
